The divided human heart
If we look into the Heart of Humanity, the thing we will see is inconsistency. At the same time that it reaches for domination, it also seeks affection. It’s a Heart that has been trained by nature — trained by evolution, for survival.
We are all consciousnesses that are riding on top of this natural, volatile substrate. The most serene, devoted monk remains as capable of holding an unrelenting violent anger. In that way we are above the animals in our higher level of consciousness, but the animal nature is still there.
The Human Heart contains the Flower and the Pyramid within it — we are, at all times, either pursuing the flowering of our self-expression, or the domination of the world. This doesn’t mean the domination is always bad — the substrate within us that wants to manipulate the world, to be effective, to be useful — those are valuable, when they help us to survive, or they are a means to the end of self-expression. It only becomes a problem when we are seeking domination over others, that we forget about the Flower, and detach from it.
So, we must find a way to integrate the Flower and the Pyramid within ourselves, without allowing the Pyramid to destroy our Flower, and to take over, as Nature, metaphorically, wants us to do — to ensure the greatest propagation of ourselves and our progeny, and to the deteriment of our self-expression and greatest happiness.
We may one day create a world where the Pyramid has lost all sway, where the problem of human survival is solved, and we can all explore our unique self-expression unhindered by concerns of competition or domination. We cannot do that until we also somehow change humanity so the Pyramid in its Heart is eliminated as well. That is why socialism and any utopian ideal can never work, because they are fatally undermined by the Pyramids in the Human Heart.
